The Cider House is run by the family Eitungjerde Høyvik: Eli-Grete and Åge, and next generation Tuba and Gard. You’ll find us in Balestrand in Sogn, a short walk from the pier and Kviknes Hotel. The whitewashed house is surrounded by three thousand fruit trees.
The Cider House is a part of the international network Économusée, and in the cellar we make cider using the méthode traditionnelle and distill different types of fruit brandy.

In addition to beverage production, the Cider House is a spacious banquet venue. We take groups all year for lunch or dinner.  We offer interpretation programs about cider and cultural walks in the art village Balestrand. We organize professional arrangements, team building, and other fun! In the summer you can visit the restaurant in the glasshouse with a panoramic view of the Sognefjord. Here the food is made with local and partly organic ingredients, with Mediterranean cuisine as inspiration. The Cider House is well-suited for weddings and celebrations of other important days.

Two thirds of the fruit trees are apple trees, amounting to 80 different varieties, among them bitter cider apples from Normandy and Somerset. The rest are plum, pear, and cherry trees—and a few apricot trees and grape vines. The climate in Sogn makes the fruit ripen slower than at southern latitudes. This makes the taste more acidic and concentrated, even after the fruit is processed.
Åge has been fascinated by fruit since his childhood, and he likes to collect different varieties for grafting and planting. His grandfather Andreas was a storekeeper and fruit cultivator, and made fruit wine. He taught Åge how to treat apples as carefully as eggs, and how to wrap them in silk so that they would stay fresh. The next generation has also grown up helping out in the orchard: pruning, picking, sorting—and eating! The youngest generation also shows fruit enthusiasm—little Edda (also the name of a plum variety!) loves to hang out with grandfather Åge in the orchard and taste the fruit. She learned early on to say both "Balholm," "plum," and "apple."
